Cope without Smoke
italk, Hampshire’s largest Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service, has teamed up with Quit4Life, Hampshire’s largest smoking cessation service to provide free workshops for people who want to stop smoking.
Called Cope without Smoke, the FREE workshops will run in Gosport and Wecock farm in Leigh Park at the end of March. Quit4Life advisors and italk therapists will work with people over six weekly sessions to address their smoking habit and look at ways to improve their mental wellbeing. This will include looking at ways to improve sleep, a common issue with smokers, and relaxation techniques to address withdrawal symptoms.

Research has shown that, instead of helping people to relax, smoking actually increases anxiety and tension. And, in the UK, smoking rates among adults with depression are about twice as high as adults without.
Both italk and Quit4Life have been running successful groups and workshops for years, and by combining their expertise they hope to enable more people to successfully quit smoking whilst also addressing the mental strain of quitting. Caroline from Gosport used the service to help her stop smoking, saying, “I feel better physically and emotionally.” She went on to say “I recognized the difficult times and dealt with it in a different way. I have tried to quit many times in the past on my own, using different products, but this time I did not use any products - I had the help of someone to talk to.”
